Introduction to Aspen Digital Services
Kevin Bradford here, Owner of Aspen Digital Services, and of Cattleman Press (a full-service commercial print shop in Baker City). Early in 2022, EONI notified us that their domain and hosting services were going to be discontinued pending the company's acquisition by Ziply. At that time Aspen Digital Services was invited to be listed as a potential provider for domain and hosting services for EONI customers. Having been managing and/or offering those same services to other Eastern Oregon businesses and organizations since 2007, we were glad to throw our hat into the ring of contenders!
We invite you to get familiar with our services and company, and if you determine that we are a good fit for your needs, we look forward to serving you. A bit of history, along with our approach to domain and hosting services, is outlined below.

The content on this page has been put together to address the most likely questions EONI customers may have when considering our service. Additionally, we have streamlined into the Quick Questions & Answers accordion module, above, the most critical questions potential Aspen hosting customers may have. Again, don't hesitate to call us if you want to cover ground faster in a live conversation, or if you just need to hear that there's a real person behind the curtain of Aspen Digital Services.
About Aspen Digital Services
Aspen Digital Services is a web and graphics company located in Baker City, founded in 2007 by Haines, Oregon resident Kevin Bradford. The company was founded to provide Eastern Oregon businesses with a source for professional graphic design and web design services, as there has historically been a vacuum for these services in the region.
Aspen offers the following core services:
- Web & email hosting
- Domain registration
- Full-service commercial printing and bindery
- Graphic design
- Web design
- Front- and back-end website support
- Web and email support
- Filemaker solution development and support
As Aspen's web design business ramped up after the 2007 launch, several customers hired us to manage their web hosting and domain registration. Customers had as their domain registrars and web hosts several big-name companies such as Network Solutions, GoDaddy, Bluehost, Hostgator, etc., and we managed customers' front- and back-end website resources and email accounts with those hosts.
As more of these requests came in, we decided to officially offer the service. Around 2010 we began advertising the hosting-management service to customers. For about seven years we accumulated hosting-management customers and as that footprint grew, it became clear that we could offer better service and an overall better experience for site owners if we were hosting the sites ourselves, rather than merely managing hosting accounts. So in 2016 we began leasing hosting resources and started porting our hosting-management customers to our own dedicated platform.
We intend to service our domain and hosting customers indefinitely, as long as the need and demand for such services remains, and so long as it can be done profitably. We believe that the personal level of service we are able to offer makes a real difference to our fellow Eastern Oregon business owners, and we look forward to serving our customers for a good, long time.
When Aspen made the switch from hosting management to actual hosting in 2016, "Elkhorn Hosting" was established as the moniker for that branch of the business. Elkhorn Hosting is essentially a marketing title. After a few years of marketing the domain and hosting business under that title, it was decided to bring the domain and hosting back under the Aspen brand. Elkhorn Hosting is, effectively, Aspen Digital Services.
ElkhornHosting.com is the front-facing URL for the web server that houses Aspen's hosting customer data, though the URL redirects visitors to AspenDigital.net.
Aspen's Hosting Approach
Our approach to domains and hosting is simple: Provide stable hosting on regularly maintained and updated hardware, make personal, dependable service available to every customer, and answer every question in layman's terms so that customers feel empowered to manage their online presence with confidence.
We inform, customers decide.
Please refer to our terms of use to know the limits of what we offer, and the expectations attached to both customer and provider in the hosting relationship.
At Aspen, we are dedicated to ensuring that our customers leave every interaction feeling that they got top-notch service and support. We have spoken, in person, to each one of our customers. No tiered support or call screening here!
Our passion is for local business relationships. True, we accept as "local" any business relationship that is forged through personal interaction, but upwards of 95% of Aspen's current domain and hosting customers are right here in Eastern Oregon. So we are a local business supporting local business.
Our service and support strength comes in that you can call us, and we will answer, and we'll speak in clear English, and you'll talk to a person each time (as opposed to a bot). If we can't answer in the moment you call, we'll call you back as soon as we can. Just know we'll call! Or, if email is your preference, you can email support@aspendigital.net. We also have a support form that customers can use, found at https://aspenstatus.com.
We encourage our domain and hosting customers to ask questions. The more site owners know and understand about how domains and hosting works, and what options and controls they have, the better equipped they are to make good decisions regarding these services, including if and when to choose a different provider!
So call us if you have questions!
Because most site owners are not web designers or IT professionals, it can be easy for site owners to feel comfortable believing that every decision regarding their domain, hosting, website and email should or will be made by those who provide their domain and hosting services. Neither have we found this to be the best approach, nor is it compatible with our terms of use. We encourage site owners to think of their online site presence just like they would about a brick-and-mortar business, and to assume the same level of decision-making for their online space as they would their business's physical space.
Site owners should be proactive in understanding the hosting environment and their hosting needs, and make decisions to maximize the return from the resources we provide through the hosting service.
Also, because we value site owners' involvement in decision-making for their sites, our service is built so that the hosting environment itself interferes as little as possible with site owners' use of the hosting resources.
The bottom line is that while we want our customers to not worry about whether or not the website and email resources we provide will be available and working at any given time (our job), we expect that customers will do the best they know how to gauge the effectiveness of their use of those resources (site owners' job), and be proactive in seeking help, or in making or requesting changes if there are suspected deficiencies.
Ownership equals control, so the more control site owners have and exercise with their sites, the more effective ownership they have of those sites. With Aspen, we give you the tools and service you need to maintain control of what is yours, retaining internally only the control that is necessary for us to provide a stable environment for all site owners on the service.
Of course, with control comes responsibility. When we store customers' login credentials, we take great care to keep them safe from unauthorized access. Site owners should do likewise.
In like manner, Aspen-generated credentials are extremely complex, and highly resistant to brute-force attempts. Site owners are encouraged to use credentials that are likewise robust.
Since site owners have access to powerful domain and hosting controls for their environments, they should proceed with caution when making changes to their environments, only doing so after ensuring that they understand what they are doing. Most customers choose to employ Aspen in making such changes, but you do have control to make them on your own.
Ultimately, Aspen's hosting environment is tuned for maximum control to site owners. This make the environment predictable, stable and responsive to customers' needs.
Domains
Yes, Aspen Digital Services registers web domains. Like EONI, Aspen Digital Services is an authorized domain reseller for registrar TuCows, Inc., and the registration service we use under TuCows is OpenSRS.
Aspen charges a fee of $35 per year to register domains for most top-level domains (TLDs). Some TLDs are marketed by their respective registries as "premium" and have a higher fee. Contact us for pricing on specific TLDs.
NOTE: When Aspen is both the registrar and web host for a domain, Aspen covers the cost of domain registration for that domain in the annual hosting fee.
Possibly:
- If your domain is currently registered with EONI and you choose to transfer your registration to Aspen Digital Services, EONI will be able to "push" your registration to Aspen Digital Services' account. These domain "pushes" do not incur a transfer fee.
- If your domain is currently registered with EONI and you choose to transfer your registration to some other registrar, you will go through a domain transfer process and a domain transfer fee will apply. The fee will be determined by the registrar receiving your domain registration.
- If your domain is currently registered with some other registrar (not EONI) and you choose to transfer your registration to Aspen Digital Services, but prefer to have your domain registration managed by some other registrar, you will go through a domain transfer process and a domain transfer fee will apply.*
NOTE: A domain "registration" fee and a domain "renewal" fee and a domain "transfer" fee are the same thing. Whether a domain is being registered for the first time, being renewed at the end of a registration term, or being transferred to a new registrar, the fee is the same.
Hosting
Unlike EONI, Aspen Digital Services does not own the hardware on which it hosts customer websites. Aspen leases hosting hardware, network resources and bandwidth from Webby Enterprieses LLC in St. Cloud, Florida. Aspen also has a service contract with Webby to provide hosting support services to Aspen.
Aspen's web server is housed in cage space leased by Webby Enterprises LLC in a secure data center owned and maintained by Satcom Direct in Melbourne, Florida. See a description of the data center and its features here.
Note that the hosting network and hardware are owned by Webby Enterprises LLC, who also runs its own own security monitoring within the data center.
We try to keep plans simple, rather than confuse customers with layered hosting options. Our hosting plans and rates are as follows:
- DNS-only Service = $30 /yr.
- Email Hosting = $179.40 /yr.
- HTML & Email Hosting = $203.40 /yr.
- PHP & Email Hosting = $239.40 /yr.
All hosting, with the exception of DNS-only Service, comes with:
- Annual domain registration1
- Domain privacy1
- 15 GB storage2
- 75 GB monthly bandwidth3
- Let'sEncrypt SSL
- 99 email accounts
- CloudLinux Lightweight Virtual Environment
- Client Hosting Control w/ cPanel Back-end
- Client-controlled SPAM email filtration4
- Daily On-network backup5
- Monthly off-network backup
- Analytics tracking (through Statcounter.com)
- Softaculous Software License
PHP hosting also includes:
- PHP
- WordPress (Installed)
- Drag-and-drop website builder license (for WordPress)
- Drag-and drop theme builder license (for WordPress)
- Drag-and drop page-building addons license (for WordPress)
1. Aspen's website hosting service includes complimentary domain registration for the hosted domain if Aspen Digital Services is the domain's registrar.
2. Additional storage space can be purchased at $0.50 per GB per month in 5 GB blocks.
3. Quota assignment is strictly for protecting against abuse. If you need more bandwidth per month than 75GB, generally it will be made available at no additional cost.
4. The only server-wide SPAM-email filtration employed by Aspen is standard sender-verification and blacklist checking; beyond that, site owners have full control over SPAM filtration, including whether or not to employ it at all. This places site owners in control, allowing them to accept the risk of SPAM filtration, or not, as they see fit.
5. Because Aspen does not have immediate and direct access to daily on-network backups, we cannot warrant them. However, the backup infrastructure and programming are in place and backups run daily.
IMPORTANT: Aspen's Hosting rates do not include costs associated with any third-party, off-network services to which your current EONI hosting may connect, such as SPAM filtering, DDOS protection or web-application firewalls. If your website currently employs such services, these will be identified in a pre-migration site audit and a consultation will be done to assess their necessity, utility and cost, prior to migration and Aspen service activation.
Once migration to Aspen's server is complete for your site, customers can access their hosting control panel area (cPanel) by logging in at https://elkhornhosting.com:2083 using their "hosting control" username and password (customers will choose a password when we verify their hosting service request; the username will also be provided at that time).
Support
- Aspen offers free technical support to customers to address back-end issues germane to the delivery of the hosting service. Example of a free tech-support request: Customer suspects that the email server is not working properly for his domain and asks Aspen to investigate.
- Requests from customers for technical support on back-end issues specific to their domain will be billed at a rate of $75 per hour, billed in 15-minute blocks. Example of a billable tech-support request: Customer asks Aspen to set up a new email account for a new employee and help the employee set up email clients on various devices to manage email.
- Requests for creative support in front-end or CMS* environments will be billed at a rate of $95 per hour, billed in 15-minute increments. Example of a billable creative support request: Customer asks Aspen to add a new product to his e-commerce store, change prices on several other products, and add a banner to the home page to advertise the new product.
*CMS stands for "Content Management System" and, in the context of web hosting, refers to any web application that is used to create and manage a website. For example, WordPress is a CMS.
NOTE on Billable Support: Nearly all our hosting customers request or require control of both the front and back ends of the hosting environment, and we are happy to offer it; we understand that such redundancy provides peace of mind to our customers. Few of our customers, however, do their own maintenance, either on the front or back ends, largely because such tasks generally fall outside their skill set and comfort level.
In order to keep maintenance or support costs from getting onerous for any of our customers:
- On the back end we invest in a hosting-management system (cPanel) that seeks to simplify common hosting maintenance tasks that would otherwise require a significant level of programming and IT knowledge to accomplish;
- On the front end we invest in a page- and theme-building system (Beaver Builder) that seeks to greatly simplify the creation and editing of front-facing website content.
We hope customers learn to use these tools to maximize the utility of their websites. That said, we urge careful and judicious use of all support and maintenance tools, as misuse can lead to crashed sites and other issues that would likely result in billed support.
Customers are encouraged to call for guidance before executing maintenance tasks they feel could be injurious to the stability or function of their sites and email systems. Remember, everything on the web is ultimately code—page-building tools write and modify code so non-coders don't have to; back-end management tools write and modify code so non-IT-professionals don't have to. All code-masking tools have their limits. Customers use editing and control-panel tools at their own risk.
Daily On-network Backup
Aspen employs a backup system to perform daily backups of customer account data on the Aspen web server. The following customer data is captured in these backups:
- Hosting settings for your domain
- Site files (data in the public_html folder)
- Emails
- Databases
This system retains backups for about 7 days.
Monthly Off-network Backup
Once a month, Aspen offloads account backups for all accounts from the web server to drives in our office, one of which is taken off site after the downloads are complete.
In the past we have employed systems to perform regular, automated, off-network backups, but such services have not always worked properly and were abandoned for lack of dependability. We are currently looking into a new automated off-network backup system and will notify customers if and when that system is employed.
Customers may back up their site files, database and emails independent of Aspen's backup system.
NOTE: Backups require server space to create. If a customer's hosting account does not have enough storage space to perform a backup, site files or emails may need to be deleted from the account to make enough space. Or, customers may purchase additional storage capacity. If customers have questions or a particular request, they may call for recommendations. In order to keep server space available, customer should download their backups to local storage devices and delete the backups from the server.
CAUTION: We do not recommend the use of front-end backup systems.
Data restoration is generally a billable support service. The support fee will be waived in certain circumstances; for example, if the need for data restoration was the direct result of hosting system failure or fault. NOTE: If restoration requests by a given customer are infrequent, or if the volume of data needing to be restored is miniscule, we will usually waive the fee. We do, however, fully retain the right to exercise this discretion on a case-by-case basis.
- Aspen customers may call 541-403-1283 at any time to request support.
- Customers may also email support@aspendigital.net to request support.
- Customers may also use the support form at https://aspenstatus.com to request support.
Billable back-end and creative support is available during regular business hours (9-5 Pacific Time) on a first-request-first-served basis, though customers are welcome to request support at any time.
"Critical" support, whether billable or not, is available 24/7 and requests are handled as quickly as possible. "Critical" support covers any issue or circumstance where a site or email service (or the server) is down or unresponsive.
If the server should go offline, notices and updates will be posted at https://aspenstatus.com, and it is recommended that customers check there prior to calling in a service request (as answers to outage-related questions will generally be the same for all customers).
NOTE: Because some customers use their Aspen-hosted email for support communication, "server offline" notices are never sent via email, but are posted at https://aspenstatus.com.
Migration Process
Migrating a website to a new host is largely a technical process. We have prepared a migration checklist for the process. It looks quite involved, but we do the heavy lifting. Our aim is to make it as simple as possible for the customer. Please call us if you have questions or are concerned about the migration process. 541-403-1283
